The Foundation is proud to support the Valentia Island Development Companies (VIDC) ambitious plans to restore and preserve the key historical sites on the island to their former glory in pursuit of UNESCO World Heritage status and to create a place which recalls the wondrous technological achievements of a time past while driving opportunities for Valentia in the future.
To make that area more attractive for young families to come and settle and give them an opportunity to perhaps build within the settlement boundary or create a cluster of houses for families.
As a resident of the area, I have serious concerns about the practical impact of the proposals contained in the draft LAP on us, the residents of the area, and future generations. There is an unacceptable and disappointing level of uncertainty and a lack of transparency as to how this will impact the local community in practical terms.

The regeneration of the town and area of Caherciveen for its people, enhancing social, educational and tourism facilities as the main economic opportunity.

The Sneem 2030 Vision plan complements our most recent 5 year TidyTowns Plan (May 2023) and addresses many of the issues highlighted every year in our TidyTowns Adjudication reports. We have a plan for a community orchard in our 2020 Sneem Biodiversity Feasibility Study.
The proposed encompassed area is too large and no consultation took place with impacted property owners.

Caherciveen Legal Aid Board (B8175) There are two ‘Opportunity sites’ on either side of the Caherciveen Legal Aid Board which KCC are hoping will be developed as part of a proposed waterfront development emphasis in the town. Killorglin GS (B2207) is still denoted as a protected structure and is within an ACA Waterville GS (B3886) and Iveragh Coastguard (B8368) are not denoted as protected structures and they are not located in an ACA. There are however a number of protected structures and an ACA immediately adjacent to our site. Former Garda Station in Dun Geagain near Ballinskelligs (B200) has been zoned ‘Community Facilities’ as per the land use zoning map on page 178. This is an OPW owned property. Kilgarvan former national school (B2152) has been designated as a protected structure The former National School and Garda Station (B2290) site in Knightstown has been designated as a protected structure. The derelict L shaped row of terraced former cottages (B2288) in Knightstown have been designated as protected structures.

This would have a number of benefits for the future of the town namely it would: • Encourage sustainable living by enhancing walking • Support the usage of the additional car parks identified in the LAP • Connect with the proposed walkway in fig. 3.31b (Indictive design brief • ) for Reenagappal • Bring more attention to the stone circle (one of the best in the country) partly because it is on a cul de sac is not getting the attention or acclaim it deserves
