Chapter 9: Economic Development

It is very disappointing to see it in writing that basically any new industrial investment will be directed at the so-called Kerry Hub and Knowledge Triangle of Killarney, Killorglin and Tralee and without any significant investment in the wider North Kerry area. Whatever minimal investment in North Kerry has to be shared with Shannon Estuary partners in Limerick and Clare. It seems the Council’s attitude to North Kerry is for it to be a dumping ground for wind energy turbines with no significant investment in job providing industries. Listowel and its surrounding areas limps by on a very small services sector and trying to live off it’s heritage town status. The provision of wind farms is in direct contradiction of it’s heritage town status. It is little wonder that the busiest time of the week in Listowel town centre is 2a.m. on a Sunday morning – sadly most of the activity at this time is in the form of anti-social behaviour.
