1. Public Rights of Way
The lakes of Killarney are one of the most recognized features of the county both throughout the country and worldwide. Traditionally in Killarney, individuals and families would have access to the lake shore and indeed this was one of the most wonderful aspects of living in Killarney. Unfortunately, in recent years, the traditional rights of ways to our beautiful and unique lake shores have been shut off, resulting in restricted access to these wonderful amenities. The county development plan mentions “the preservation of public rights of way which give access to seashore, mountain, lakeshore, riverbank or other place of natural beauty or recreational utility”, however nowhere on the plan does it make specific reference to granting access to the north shore of Lough Leane. This should be rectified so that future generations can access and enjoy our lakes and should be included in the county development plan.
