6. Additions to the Record of Protected Structures

I would like the County Council to consider the addition of the Latitude and Longitude stone at Waterville Cable Station to the list of protected structures.

Address: Waterville Cable Station, Waterville

Description: Longitude and Latitude Stone

Special Interest: Historical, Scientific and Technical

Appraisal:

This memorial stone was erected by Commercial Cable Company Waterville Cable Station to record the Latitude and Longitude of Waterville which was determined in 1892 as part of the great scientific endeveavour undertaken by McGill Observatory, Montreal and the Royal Observatory Greenwich to determine the longitude of Montreal directly from Greenwich.  Waterville Cable station played an active part in this work which took advantage of the improved cable technology at the time.  An accurate determination of Montreal was signficiant because McGill Observatory was the time base station for Canada. Not only that but the result of this work led to a more accurate longitude determination of Harvard.  McGill also provided time signals for as far afield as Bermuda, Jamaica, Australia & the Azores so this work had an effect right across the globe!

The stone was lost for several decades but was restored to Waterville Cable Station in 2013 when it was unveiled by Jimmy Deenihan,  Minister for Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht and visited by Canadian Ambassador Loyola Hearn.

7. Architectural Conservation Areas

I would like the unique features of Iveragh Terrace, Waterville Cable Station to be considered.

The Cable station offices dating from 1899 which is adjacent to Iveragh Terrace is a protected structure (NIAH 21309801 RPS 98-1)

7,8,9 Iveragh Terrace houses are also protected structures (098-001 - A -C)

As demonstrated by the historic 6 adn 25 inch ordnance survey maps, 1-6 Iveragh Terrace were built before both the 1899 Cable Station Offices and the already protected 7,8,9 Iveragh Terrace houses.

National Townland and Historical Map Viewer (arcgis.com)

1-6 Iveragh Terrace have a different design to the other Waterville Cable Station buildings and are unique in the area.

1,2,4-6 houses maintain a "cable moulding" over the front door and lower front window which was included in the design of these houses.  This design feature is referenced explicitly in the correspondence dating to 1886 between the Superintendent of Waterville Cable Station and the M.D.  of Commercial cable Company in London. This correspondence is held in the Friends of Waterville Cable Station Archives at the The Story of Waterville Cable Station Exhibition in Tech Amergin.  This archive also contains correspondence outlining the building of these houses over the course of 1886-1887: the first pair of "cottages" (as they are referred to in the correspondence) are recorded as completed on Dec 31st 1886 and by April 16th 1887 the 2nd pair were completed.

5. Record of Protected Structures

Entry:

SPUNKANE 21309805 98-5. DETACHED HOUSE (FISHING LODGE) IVERAGH LODGE R ARCH, ART, HIST, SOC, TECH

Submit that Scientific should be added to reflect the scientific endeavours to determine the longitude of Montreal in 1892

SPUNKANE 21309801 98-1. CABLE STATION WATERVILLE CABLE STATION R ARCH, ART, HIST, SOC

Add TECH due to the engineering technology utilised within the Waterville Cable Station

Chapter 8: Gaeltacht Areas, Culture & Heritage

I submit that in the build architectural heritage section there should be reference made to the preservation of the remaining Industrial heritage buildings/sites of Kerry.

The fact that Kerry was home to three transatlantic cable stations  is something unique that should be celebrated and the remaining associated industrial heritage sites preserved.

The three cable stations are called out as a Milestone by the IEEE (Institute of Electronic Engineers)

Waterville cable station is part of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.

This would be complementary to the admirable aim of Kerry County Council of supporting the UNESCO bid for Valentia cable station.
